Conservatories - FAQ

Here, you’ll find answers to common questions about conservatories, including how long they last, whether you need planning permission, if you can have a kitchen in one, and what kind of foundations are required.

How long do conservatories last?

A high-quality conservatory from a trusted installer can last for decades. Thanks to its weather-resistant properties and low-maintenance nature, a conservatory can easily last 20 to 30 years, or even longer with proper care. We back this up with a 20 year guarantee, at double the industry standard.

Our UPVC and aluminium conservatories are designed to withstand harsh conditions, ensuring it won’t warp, rot, or fade over time. With occasional cleaning and inspections, your conservatory can continue to provide enjoyment for many years to come.

Do conservatories need planning permission?

Most conservatories are considered permitted developments, meaning they typically don’t require planning permission, as long as they meet specific criteria. These include ensuring the extension doesn’t cover more than half the total ground area, the height of the conservatory doesn’t exceed the original house’s roof, and it doesn’t extend beyond the principal or side elevation facing a road.

Additional rules apply, such as limiting the eaves height and ensuring materials match the house’s existing appearance. If you live in a conservation area, National Park, or World Heritage Site, more restrictions may apply. For example, the extension must be one storey, no more than 4 metres high, and shouldn’t extend beyond the principal or side elevation.

Always check local regulations for specifics. Our experienced team can help you with this.

Can you have a kitchen in a conservatory?

Yes, you can have a kitchen in a conservatory! The abundance of natural light makes it a perfect space for cooking, creating a bright and airy environment. You can also enjoy views of the garden while you cook, making it a more relaxing task.

Working with experienced designers, like the team we have at TWC, ensures your conservatory kitchen is both functional and stylish, maximising space while maintaining a comfortable, practical atmosphere for everyday use.

What footings do I need for a conservatory?

You’ll need strong, durable footings to support its structure and ensure stability. Correct footings are essential to prevent issues further down the line, considering the weight of the conservatory’s brickwork and glazing.

The type of footings required depends on the ground conditions and the size of the conservatory, so it’s crucial to work with experienced installers who can look into this.

A solid foundation will not only improve structural integrity but also enhance energy efficiency and extend the lifespan of your conservatory.
